This week, the Senate is expected to vote on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for 2014. As you know, President Obama has blamed NDAA provisions from past years for preventing his closure of Guantanamo Bay prison.  Please call your Senators today or tomorrow (Tuesday) and tell them to vote for S. 1197, the version passed by the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) last summer.  (Find your senators contact information here:  senate.gov.)

Sections 1031 through 1034 of S. 1197 would help close Guantanamo and provide justice for the prisoner.  For example they would:

  • Replace the certification requirement for transferring prisoners to other countries with "factors to be considered" when making transfer decisions

  • Allow President Obama to transfer prisoners to the U.S. mainland to face trial, or to be imprisoned, thereby making the closure of Guantánamo possible

  • Allow prisoners to be temporarily moved to the U.S. mainland for medical treatment that cannot be provided at Guantánamo.

If all goes well, and Senator Levin's bill passes the Senate, we will contact you again for your support in the House of Representatives.

Thank you, as always, for all you do.
